Pharmazeutin Hala Al-Khoury erhielt den Preis für die beste Diplomarbeit 2015, verliehen durch das Serumwerk Bernburg AG. Das Thema ihrer Diplomarbeit lautete „Anti-inflammatory studies of glycosaminoglycans“. Die Aufgabe bestand darin, Substanzen wie Heparin, Hyaluronsäure und andere auf ihre Fähigkeit zur Verringerung von Entzündungen nach der Implantation von Materialien, wie z.B. Kathetern oder Biosensoren, in einem in-vitro-Modell nachzuweisen. Dazu musste Frau Al-Khoury neben der Herstellung von Oberflächenbeschichtungen und deren Charakterisierung mit physikalischen Methoden ein Zellkulturmodell mit humanen Makrophagen aufbauen, um die entzündungshemmenden Eigenschaften von Heparin und Hyaluronsäure nachzuweisen. Sie konnte dabei zeigen, dass insbesondere Heparin, das im klinischen Alltag zur Hemmung der Blutgerinnung eingesetzt wird, auch über ausgezeichnete entzündungshemmende Eigenschaften verfügt, was das Einsatzspektrum von Heparin in der Medizin erheblich erweitern könnte. Die Diplomarbeit wurde mit dem Prädikat „sehr gut“ bewertet und verteidigt. Ergebnisse ihrer Diplomarbeit sind auch Bestandteil einer Veröffentlichung im „International Journal of Artificial Organs“ mit ihr als Koautorin.

Niepel received an recognition of excellence from The Board of Governors of the European Society for Artificial Organs for his PhD thesis "Nanostructures and their physicochemical modification as tool to control cell function", which contributes significantly and outstandigly to the field of artificial organs!
